Above the ruins

Above the Ruins is a British post-punk group founded in 1984 by Tony Wakeford .

history

Wakeford founded Above the Ruins after leaving the formation Death in June . The group remained controversial for the short time of its existence and also later, on the one hand because of Wakeford's membership in the right-wing extremist National Front , on the other hand because of its participation in the sampler No Surrender, licensed by the national front label White Noise Records ! , on which the white power band Skrewdriver was represented.

Shortly after the release of the debut album Songs of the Wolf and the sampler No Surrender! dissolved Wakeford Above the Ruins and started the band Sol Invictus . In later years Wakeford denied any connection between Above the Ruins and the right-wing scene with Sol Invictus; For a while, he even denied having even been involved in Above the Ruins (whose publications contained no information about the group). In contrast, he admitted in at least one interview that Gareth Smith from No Remorse had been involved in early Sol Invictus recordings, but because of its "connections" (probably No Remorse's involvement in the right-wing extremist scene, from which Wakeford himself began to distance himself) urged him to exit his new project.

Stylistically, Above the Ruins offered a mixture of post-punk and dark wave , not dissimilar to the early Death in June as well as the later Sol Invictus debut album. The texts dealt with subjects such as patriotism , anti- Marxism , anti- egalitarianism and anti- multiculturalism , especially explicitly in the piece Progress . For some pieces Wakeford used the poetry volume 1957: Before the Storm by Paul Comben (1984), which became even more radical due to its slight changes in content. The comparatively poor recording quality of their releases, the (possibly deliberately chosen) anonymity of the band members and the political connections limited the level of awareness of Above the Ruins to a niche existence, despite a new edition of Songs of the Wolf on CD in 1995 .
