Abrasion resistance

The abrasion resistance is the resistance of the solid surface to mechanical stress, in particular friction . It is determined by the surface properties of the substances involved, mainly the roughness and hardness .

In industry, abrasion resistance is determined by methods such as grinding or sandblasting . The test can either be prescribed according to DIN or EN standards or it can be part of a quality control.

Examples: Ceramic tiles are divided into different abrasion resistance classes, such as "Abrasion 5" (highest abrasion resistance), "Abrasion 4" (high abrasion resistance), "Abrasion 3" (medium abrasion resistance) etc.

To measure the abrasion resistance of natural stones , the stone test specimen is ground down using standardized abrasives in accordance with an EU standard , and the abrasion loss is measured. The Mohs scratch hardness is not suitable for measuring the hardness of natural stones, as it can only be used for minerals .

In road construction , the impact test is used to determine an abrasion value that characterizes the resistance of the aggregate used .
