Abrostola agnorista is a butterfly fromthe owl butterfly family (Noctuidae).

features

The moths reach a wingspan of 29 to 37 millimeters. Similar to the dark gray nettle-humped owl, the fore wings are rather narrow, but they can be a little wider than this one. The moth is dark gray, but its fringing area has a rather whitish hue, which is why it appears more contrasting than the dark gray nettle-humped owl . The flaws are only outlined in weak black, if at all, and there are no veins in the seam area. Yellowish to whitish interference is mostly found in the basal area and in the lower part of the fringing area.

Similar species

Since the moth is very similar to the dark gray nettle-humped owl ( Abrostola triplasia ), the two species can only be distinguished in cases of doubt through a genital examination .

distribution

Abrostola agnorista is native to the northern Mediterranean . The distribution area extends from south-east France (local occurrences) over the south of Switzerland, Italy, Corsica and Sicily over parts of the Carpathian Basin in Hungary to Romania and the Balkans . On the Balkan Peninsula, the species is known in Slovenia, Croatia, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Albania and Greece. There is no confirmed evidence from non-European regions. The finds from the south of the Caucasus and the northwest of Iran are Abrostola hyrcanica .

Way of life

The butterfly, which flies in two generations from May to September, hibernates as a pupa . The caterpillar feeds on nettles ( Urtica ) and upright glassweed ( Parietaria officinalis ).
