A shear pin, or shear pin for short, prevents excessive torque on machines , shafts and gears by breaking when the shear stress is too high . The shear pin runs across the shaft and a corresponding sleeve on the opposite side.

A shear pin is a mechanical safeguard ( predetermined breaking point ) that prevents expensive components from being damaged when overloaded. If the pin breaks , the shaft remains guided, but can no longer transmit any torque.

Shear pins are installed between the drive and work spindle in machine tools , for example , in order to protect the gear unit from overload.

Shear pins in bridge cranes prevent loads that are significantly above the nominal load from being lifted and thus prevent the crane from being overloaded.

In outboard motors , shear pins prevent damage to the engine and gearbox if the rotating propeller comes into contact with an obstacle . Shear pins prevent damage to the tractor and drive vehicle in agricultural machinery .

In commercial aircraft, the main landing gears are attached to the wing with predetermined breaking points. This construction is intended to prevent the wing structures and the fuel tanks built into them from being immediately damaged in the event of a hard landing; the "removal" of the landing gear is to be accepted in this sense.
