Abbey (brand)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Abtei is a brand of Abtei OP Pharma GmbH, under which health products are sold.

history

The Abtei brand was launched in 1897 by Oskar Sarhage in Bielefeld. Sarhage, a trader in tea and spices who was well versed in medicine , received the first recipes for his products from a friar friend, who also drew his attention to the rich treasure of monastery medicine . The brand name Abtei arose from this connection.

In 1996, Abtei came under the umbrella of SmithKline Beecham Consumer Healthcare GmbH & Co. KG, today's GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare GmbH + Co. KG, Bühl .

In summer 2012 the Abtei brand was taken over by the newly founded Abtei OP Pharma GmbH, a subsidiary of the Belgian pharmaceutical company Omega Pharma . Omega Pharma, in turn, has been part of Perrigo , the world's largest manufacturer of OTC drugs , since 2014 .

research

In addition to conventional research, Abtei also worked with the Institute for the History of Medicine at the University of Würzburg from 1999 until it was taken over by Omega Pharma and Perrigo . As part of the research group for monastery medicine , historical writings from the monasteries and abbeys were newly translated and the medicinal plants found were recorded in a database. Then the relevance for modern clinical pictures was checked using modern scientific methods.

As part of the cooperation, Abbey also supported research trips to Armenia, Brazil, Uzbekistan and Iran.

Products

Under the motto "Because I know what is good for me." (formerly: "107 natural recipes for your health") today Abtei sells medicines and nutritional supplements for self-medication . The treatment focuses on the common cold, skin, calming down, blood circulation, digestion, bladder, kidney and mobility. Some products were in the range for decades. So was z. Fennel honey, for example, was offered by the Abbey as early as 1948 under the name Maya the Bee and was in the range until it was taken over by Omega Pharma in 2012.

From 2003, under the brand name Abtei Apotheken exclusive (originally Abtei Pharma ), products that were only available in pharmacies were also manufactured for a few years.

Others

Abtei has repeatedly received the "Pegasus Award" from Reader's Digest as the "most trustworthy brand in its area" (around 200 brands).

Abtei has a level of awareness of more than 80 percent among adult German citizens who practice self-medication.
