Abthugni

Abthugni was an ancient city in North Africa near today's Suwar (Mr. Es-Souar) in Tunisia. In Roman times it belonged to the province of Africa , after its division to the Byzacena . The Roman consular (former consul ) Gaius Rutilius Gallicus had surveying work carried out under Vespasian near Abthugni. Abthugni has been a Municipium since Hadrian . In late antiquity it was the seat of a bishop; The titular Abthugni of the Roman Catholic Church goes back to the diocese .
Several ruins of the city have been preserved, including several temples, thermal baths and tombs. According to the inscriptions, some of the public buildings were restored in the 4th century at the time of Emperor Valens .
