Abu Bakr Yunis Jaber ( Arabic أبو بكر يونس جابر, DMG Abū Bakr Yūnis Ǧābir ; * 1952 in the oasis of Jalu , al-Wahat ; † October 20, 2011 in Sirte ) was a Libyan brigadier general , according to the EU with the rank of major general .

Life

Jaber attended the Benghazi Military Academy and was there in the same class as Muammar al-Gaddafi . Like him, he was a member of the League of Freelance Officers , which overthrew then King Idris in 1969 .

He was the army chief of the armed forces of Libya until the civil war in Libya in 2011 . According to reports, he was placed under house arrest by Gaddafi on February 21, 2011 for sympathy with the demonstrators - in some cases expressly citing Libyan government circles.

Yunis Jaber was affected by the EU sanctions against Libya since February 28, 2011 . The reason given by the European Union was “overall responsibility for the actions of the armed forces”.

He was killed together with Gaddafi during an attempted escape after two months of siege on October 20, 2011 in the final battle for Sirte during the capture.
