The Abu Dhabi Metro is a subway system planned for Abu Dhabi , the capital of the United Arab Emirates .

Construction projects and planning

In March 2009, the Department of Transport (DoT), which is responsible for planning the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, presented the expansion of rail-based local public transport in the capital by 2030 as part of the Surface Transport Master Plan (STMP) . In view of the growing traffic and to avoid excessive environmental pollution , the city wants to build a metro , which is to be supplemented in the city center with a few shorter tram lines as efficient feeders. [obsolete] The route network of the Abu Dhabi Metro is to have a length of 131 km when completed and connect all important suburbs such as Saadiyat , Yas Island , Masdar City , Al Raha Beach and the airport with the city center. The detailed planning of the routing is left to international engineering offices, which also have to submit suggestions regarding the routing underground, at street level or on elevated railway tracks. In October 2009 the DoT announced that it had commissioned a feasibility study based on the concepts it had received. It can be assumed that Abu Dhabi will also opt for a driverless-controlled metro system, since it is now becoming apparent that this will prove itself in neighboring Dubai. It was also confirmed that Abu Dhabi will participate with interest in the construction of the Gulf Transversal, a high-speed railway from Kuwait via Saudi Arabia to the eastern UAE, which is currently still in the pre-project stage .

In March 2012, DoT announced the starting shot for the construction of the metro and updated the previous plans, which will also reduce the total length of the metro network from 131 to 70 km in the final stage. The first phase of the Abu Dhabi Metro will connect the main island with the most important secondary islands and will mostly run underground. The plans show four lines in the core area with a length of around 60 kilometers, one of which is a metro line (M1) running through the main island from west to east, two light rail lines (L1 and L2) connecting the large outer islands via the city and the BRT line L3 as Ring line (loop) in the area of the western city. DoT specifies the opening date 2016/17; the daily number of passengers is estimated at 823,000. No information has yet been given on the total or partial costs of the system, but on the economic benefits of the metro: by reducing traffic jams, saving time, reducing environmental pollution and the number of accidents, etc., it is initially estimated that around USD 800 million will benefit per year. In contrast to conventional trams, the trams run independently of individual traffic on their own route. They are also intended to connect more distant urban regions which, according to the presented urban development plans, are expected to be built by 2030 or later. One of the LRT (Light Rail Transit) lines, another name for the light rail vehicles, could also lead to the border of the Emirates Dubai and be connected there with the Dubai Metro.
