Abul Gharib
Magister Abul Gharib Arsruni (Apnelgaripes, Abelgarib, Aplłarib Artsruni, Abu 'lgharib Artsuni) from Vaspurakan , son of Hassan and grandson of Chach'ik Kuln (Xacîʿk) (Smbat) or son of Xacîʿk (Vardan), was a Byzantine statalter from 1042 Cilicia with seat in Tarsus . He was of Armenian descent, but belonged to the Greek Orthodox Church, which made him unpopular with his Monophysite compatriots. After Vardan Arewelci , he controlled Missis , Adana , Lampron and Barbaron . According to Kurkijan, he was a relative of the Oshin of Lampron.
His daughter was married to David, the son of the Bagratid Gagik II , who ruled Kaesarea ( Kayseri ) and was a bitter enemy of the Romanians. According to the historian Vardan Arewelcʿi , Abul Gharib captured David because he did not like him. His father tried to free him, but was strangled on the way, and David was poisoned by Abul Gharib. Kirakos , however, reports that Gagik was killed by the three sons of Pantaleon from Kybistra / Kyzistra and that his body was displayed on the ramparts of the castle. His troops then dispersed.
Abul Gharib's other daughter married Galeran von Le Puiset , a follower of Baldwin II of Edessa , who also did not end well.
Abul Gharibs died in 1080.
A seal of Aplłarib was found in Lebanon near Tarsos . It shows St. George with the inscription »῾Ο ἅγιος Γεώργιος. / (Κύριε βοήθει τῷ σῷ δούλῳ ᾿Απνελγαρίπῃ βέστῃ) «(" St. George, help your servant the magister Apnelgaripes ".)
