Wrecking yards in Mumbai
Coordinates: 18 ° 58 ′ 20 ″ N , 72 ° 51 ′ 12 ″ E
The scrapping yards in Mumbai are used to scrap ships . The area is located north of the Bombay docks in the Mumbai district of Lakri Bunder South and belongs to the Mumbai Port Trust . The area is divided into so-called plots, on which six to a maximum of eight ships can be abandoned at the same time. Ghasiram Gokalchand, which has been operating for over 50 years, is one of the well-known companies. The importance is many times less than that of the scrapping yards near Alang .
The wages of the workers are around 1.50 euros a day. They also lack training. In 2003 the International Metalworkers Union started a pilot project for the approximately 6,000 scrappers.
