Badge for the volunteers of the border troops of the GDR

The badge for the voluntary helpers of the border troops of the GDR was donated and awarded in one version on April 8, 1983 with ordinance number 018/9/001 by the Minister for National Defense of the German Democratic Republic , Heinz Hoffmann . It was thus a state badge of honor of the National People's Army and protected as a state badge of honor. The badge was introduced as an expression of approval of the border security measures that had been carried out by the volunteers of the border troops since 1952. In addition to this badge, the same regulation also introduced the green armband for the border troop volunteers. The shield-shaped badge made of sheet steel is 39 mm high and 31 mm wide with a gold frame and shows the golden four-line inscription on a light green background: FREIWILLIGER / HELFER / GRENZTRUPPEN / DER DDR . After the second line, the state coat of arms of the GDR is embedded, which is shown in color. The back shows a cross-soldered needle with a counter-hook. The whole badge itself is finally covered with polyester resin.
