Accellion, Inc. is a US company that offers file sharing solutions. The Accellion applications are used in companies and government agencies. They have functions for business users and comprehensive IT management tools to ensure data security and compliance . Compared to services like Dropbox , the software can also be used on your own servers. Organizations thus have control over their data storage. Accellion's services are available through a web browser and native mobile apps for Apple iOS , Android and Blackberry OS .

Accellion was founded in 1999. In 2005 the company relocated to Palo Alto , California, with offices in Europe and Asia.

The company's original focus was on distributed file storage management and backup technologies. Since 2005, its activities have focused on file transfer technology. Important issues are the security and compliance of file sharing. The aim is to help organizations transfer files of any size between internal and external participants while ensuring data security and compliance. The company's demand for secure data transmission is based on concerns about security risks associated with using P2P file sharing .

Today companies and government agencies worldwide use Accellion applications for file sharing. Industries that use the Accellion applications include the pharmaceutical industry, law firms and judicial authorities, finance, advertising, consumer goods, oil and gas companies, and the construction industry with architects, engineers and construction companies.

The spectrum of customers ranges from organizations with fewer than 10 users to organizations with more than 100,000 users. Accellion's solutions can be used internally and externally, in public, private or hybrid clouds or in a FIPS 140-2 certified environment. All application options can be combined with one another. They can be installed in a multi-site installation or as a standalone single site. Accellion is funded by Riverwood Capital and Baring Private Equity Partners Asia.

Accellion released the first file transfer solution, a physical on-site solution, in May 2005. Accellion's first customer was Ogilvy & Mather. The company received the Computerworld Premier 100 IT Leaders 2005, Best in Class Award, for implementing Accellion file transfer.

In 2007, Accellion introduced the industry's first Vmware, a virtual solution for secure file transfer. In March 2011, Accellion released its Secure Collaboration product, which has been adopted by many companies and government agencies.

The market research institute 451 Group sees the development from the file transfer roots to the collaboration market as a special feature of Accellion.

In 2012, the company launched the Accellion mobile file sharing packages for businesses and individuals. The new packages include a synchronization feature called "kitedrive".

Early requests for file transfer solutions came from organizations that need to transfer large files, such as the marketing and advertising, healthcare, and universities industries.

Many organizations had the problem that the large volume of files during transmission had a negative impact on e-mail performance and that e-mail storage was increasingly demanding. Accellion provided an application to reduce email attachments in transit and storage, and to improve email performance for file transfers via email. The Accellion file sharing was also a solution for organizations that had problems and security concerns transferring data via FTP servers. Accellion's applications were easier to use and manage, and also provided the necessary security.

The company also offers its customers a mobile product called Accellion Mobile Productivity Suite, which enables files from Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint to be securely edited on mobile devices.
