The Ace Cats was a German rockabilly group that was founded in 1980 as Alley Cats .

Band history

The founding members Markus Fräger and his brother Luitger Fräger had known Thomas Szalaga since 1977. At that time, all three were playing in different groups. In 1980 they founded their group Alley Cats, but renamed them to The Ace Cats in 1982 because they had the same name as a US punk formation to avoid a legal dispute.

Christian and Tina Schudde and Petra Humfeld (previously briefly Anne Fräger) completed the formation and produced in 1982 their first LP Cat Talk , the majority Rockabilly carried forward style cover versions included popular songs. With this album, the formation landed a first respectable success. In 1983 the band opened up for Fats Domino and Shakin 'Stevens .

In the course of the Neue Deutsche Welle , the group changed its concept to German-language texts. The idea worked, and with their title Linda in 1984 they were at the height of their success. It was their only chart placement, but other titles in a row became known through the radio ( Rockabella , Gina ).

In 1985 the group separated, a comeback attempt in 1988 with Ted Shansky as singer failed. The comeback came in 1996, when Jürgen Weber (vocals), Thorsten Birkenfeld (guitar) and Kaspar Bierkämper (bass) joined the group. From the original Ace Cats, the singers Tina Szalaga and Petra Schudde as well as Thomas Szalaga and drummer Christian Schudde remained. After a few single releases, the group was quiet again. Founding member Luitger Fräger died in a car accident in 2005. Thomas Szalaga died in 2012.
