Way of life

Acerocnema macrocera in copula

Acerocnema macrocera is an early spring species whose phase of activity begins in the first third of March and ends in early May. Adult flies can be found in stocks of the fingered larkspur ( Corydalis solida ), where partner search and mating also take place. The females lay their eggs on the developing pods of the lark spur.

Taxonomy

The species was described by Meigen as Cordylura macrocera in 1826 and incorporated into the genus Acerocnema newly established by Becker in 1896 . Today this genus comprises five species, of which only A. macrocera is native to Central Europe.
