Achatinella thaanumi is an extinct species of snail from the on the island of O'ahu endemic terrestrial snails genus Achatinella .

description

Achatinella thaanumi achieved a case length of 19.1 mm and a case diameter of 11.6 mm. The diameter of the mouth was 10.3 mm. There were six turns. The white case was perforated, left-handed, ovoid-conical, thin but moderately reinforced. Above and below the edge area, two chocolate-brown bands surrounded the case. The embryonic convolutions were white and turned blue-gray towards the tip. The shiny surface was marked with fine growth lines and with almost faded spiral stripes. The spindle was conical with almost straight outlines and a tiny tip. The seam had a narrow border. The mouth was marked with faint white bands. The white hem of the mouth was pointed and slightly thickened on the inside. The white spindle fold was reinforced.

The occurrence was on a ravine of Mount Kaala in the region of Waianae on Oahu limited.

status

The species is only known from two specimens from the collection of the malacologist Ditlev Thaanum , which were described in 1914 by Henry Augustus Pilsbry and Charles Montague Cooke . It died out at the beginning of the 20th century. The reasons for the disappearance are unknown.
