The Achatinellidae are a family of terrestrial, tropical snails from the suborder of the land snails (Stylommatophora). It is the only family in the Achatinelloidea superfamily . Occasionally the German common name tree snails is used for the family, but it is also used for species from the superfamily Helicoidea and should therefore not be used for this tropical family.
features
The housings are twisted to the right or left, and very narrow to unabelled. They are predominantly highly conical, oblong-egg-shaped and of small to medium size. The embryonic convolutions are smooth or slightly spirally striped. The later turns, five to seven in number, are smooth or radially ribbed. The relatively large mouth can be modified by parietal or spindle lamellae. The mouth edges can be simple, bent or thickened. With a few exceptions, an inner lip is not formed. In the genital apparatus there is generally no epiphallus on the penis. The inner walls of the penis have the characteristic "agatinellid" pillars, but they can also be modified. The penile appendix is usually present, but it can also be modified, reduced, or completely absent. The penal retractor muscle is usually branched, more rarely just simple. The prostate consists of a few to numerous, finger-shaped to simple acini at the base of the albumin gland or stretched out along the uterus. A blind sack is missing. The stalk of the spermathec has no diverticulum .
Geographical occurrence and way of life
The species of the family probably originally only appeared on the islands of the Pacific Ocean. These include many endemic species whose occurrence is restricted to a single island. Some species are (in the meantime) distributed in Indonesia and on some islands in the Indian Ocean. Presumably they came to these islands through anthropogenic displacement or were introduced.
Systematics
According to Bouchet & Rocroi (2005), the superfamily only includes the family named Achatinellidae. Schileyko (1998) also assigns the Amastridae family to the superfamily, whereas Bouchet & Rocroi assigns it to the Cochlicopoidea superfamily .
