The cochlicopoidea are a terrestrial superfamily of snails from the suborder of land snails (Stylommatophora).

features

The housings are cylindrical, highly conical, oval, or also strongly flattened. The housings are usually relatively small. The surface is little sculpted, the shell is relatively thin. Spindle lamellae or teeth may be developed in the mouth. The mouth edges may be thickened, but are usually not bent or widened. The navel can be open or closed. The penis and epiphallus are present in the hermaphroditic genital apparatus. A penile appendix is also usually present, the penis is internally smooth or has longitudinal folds or other structures. The penile retractor can be branched or unbranched.

Geographical occurrence and way of life

The species of the family are distributed holarctic and isolated on the Hawaiian Islands (Amastridae). They live in damp forests, in mosses and under leaves, also on trees, but also in drier places. The animals lay only a few large eggs or are viviparous.

Systematics

The superfamily is divided into two families by Bouchet & Rocroi (2005), Cochlicopidae and Amastridae. In 2010 the family Azecidae will be rebuilt:
