Achilles Nikolayevich Alferaki ( Greek Αχιλλέας Αλφεράκης - Achilléas Alferákis , Russ. Ахиллес Николаевич Алфераки - Achilles Nikolayevich Alferaki , sometimes referred to as Akhilles or Ahilles transcribed; * 3. July 1846 in Kharkov , Russian Empire ; † 27. December 1919 in Petrograd ) was a Russian composer and politician of Greek descent.

Life

Achilles Alferaki was born in Charkow (today Ukraine) in 1846, but he spent his entire childhood in the city of Taganrog in the magnificent palace on Catholic Street (currently the Alferaki Palace in Frunze St.) Achilles received a good home education and easily became a student of the historical and philological faculty of Moscow University , where, among other subjects, he also studied music theory under the direction of Professor Frosch. Music was his favorite hobby, but he couldn't devote all of his time to music. Family businesses brought him back to Taganrog, where he settled in late 1870.

Alferaki Palace in Taganrog

In 1880 Alferaki was elected mayor of Taganrog. During his tenure, he took care of the cleanliness and beauty of Taganrog and participated in the establishment of various charitable institutions. When he was mayor, the streets of Taganrog were paved with paving and trees were planted; the first sidewalks came into use.

The mayor promoted the city's education system. Some of his proposals were often thought to be fantastic and wasteful on the part of Taganrog politicians, but some of them were carried out, such as: B. Alferaki's proposals to erect a monument to Tsar Peter the Great in Taganrog or to modernize the Taganrog harbor.

The mayor was very musical. Taganrog became a real music city in the south of Russia. In his house on Grecheskaya Street, people played and sang, danced and played cards. Alferaki was famous for his ability to draw caricatures quickly and easily . Many of them have survived to this day.

In 1888 Alferaki resigned from his position and moved to Saint Petersburg. From 1891 he was administrator of the office of the Ministry of the Interior , then director of the telegraph agency. He mainly devoted his free time to music. He wrote over 100 romances and two operas: " Erlkönig " and "Heidentdaughter". Alferaki died in 1919.

He was the brother of the zoologist Sergei Nikolajewitsch Alferaki .
