Eight little preludes and fugues

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Eight Little Preludes and Fugues are a collection of eight organ works , each consisting of a prelude and a fugue .

It has long been assumed that the pieces were composed by Johann Sebastian Bach himself. The works were therefore each given a number in the Bach works directory (BWV 553-560). Nowadays it is believed that the Eight Little Preludes and Fugues were composed by a student of JS Bach. Some experts believe that Johann Tobias Krebs is the composer, and they are also attributed to his son Johann Ludwig Krebs .

The Eight Little Preludes and Fugues are often performed in a worship context. This is due on the one hand to their short playing time of only a few minutes, and on the other hand to the fact that they are of a low degree of difficulty compared to other Bach preludes and fugues. The little preludes and fugues are often part of the organ training and were often recorded on phonograms.

In the order of the number in the Bach Works Directory (BWV), these are the following eight pieces:

  1. Prelude and Fugue in C major (BWV 553)
  2. Prelude and Fugue in D minor (BWV 554)
  3. Prelude and Fugue in E minor (BWV 555)
  4. Prelude and Fugue in F major (BWV 556)
  5. Prelude and Fugue in G major (BWV 557)
  6. Prelude and Fugue in G minor (BWV 558)
  7. Prelude and Fugue in A minor (BWV 559)
  8. Prelude and Fugue in B flat major (BWV 560)
