The Acta Tropica is a tropical medicine journal, in 1944 by the four Basler professors Rudolf Geigy , Alfred Gigon , Felix Speiser and Rudolf Tschudi was founded. Rudolf Geigy was also the head of the Basel-based Swiss Tropical Institute . Its main purpose was to publish research results in the entire field of tropical medicine quickly, easily and without peer review . The reports were published in the original German or French, while English did not become the predominant language until after 1970. While the editors were always firmly anchored in Basel, half of the editorial work was done by foreign researchers as early as 1949.

In 1977 the Basler Verlag Schwabe & Co took over the publishing of the magazine from the now dissolved Verlag für Recht und Gesellschaft . In order to increase the number of readers, Acta Tropica now focused more on the bio-medical aspects of tropical diseases. But even this could not stop the decline, so in 1989 the magazine was taken over by the Dutch publisher Elsevier .

Today the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute participates in the specialist journal Tropical Medicine & International Health .
