Alfred Gigon

Alfred Gigon (born September 24, 1883 in Delsberg , † July 25, 1975 in Basel ) was a Swiss doctor .

Life

Gigon studied biochemistry and physiology at the universities of Berlin and Stockholm . He received his doctorate in 1906 from the University of Basel with a thesis on a "metabolic experiment in a case of pancreatic diabetes ". From 1909 he worked at the Basel Medical University Polyclinic. He completed his habilitation in 1911 and became an associate professor in 1921 and a full professor of internal medicine in 1933 . From 1932 to 1954 he was the chief physician of the Medical University Polyclinic. From 1925 to around 1963 he was editor-in-chief of the Swiss Medical Weekly .

Gigon was also the "promoter of the Swiss Society for Internal Medicine ", in 1943 co-founder of the Swiss Academy of Medical Sciences and in 1945 co-founder of the Swiss Tropical Institute .

Gigon was also a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and an honorary doctorate from the Sorbonne .
