Acton (Vermont)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Acton was a parish in Windham County , Vermont , which was proclaimed and settled on February 23, 1782 with 5,045 acres , about a quarter of the usual size. It was created from an area that was created by a miscalculation, called Johnson's Gore . The first settlement began as early as 1781; the census of 1790 shows a population of 49 people, that of 1,800 of 131 people. A first constituent community meeting took place on March 3, 1801. Acton never sent his own representative to the Vermont Senate, but was represented by the neighboring township of Townshend. In October 1840 it became part of Townshend and has since formed the northern part of this town .
