On June 29, 1959, Pope John XXIII issued the encyclical Ad Petri cathedram , which contains the announcement of the Second Vatican Council and the first council programs.

Announcement of a council

In line with the opening of the Catholic Church he wanted in the run-up to the council announced on January 25, 1959, in this encyclical he spoke of people's longing for unity. A threefold unity stood before his eyes, namely in teaching, in organization and in the common worship of God. Topics that were discussed in many of the addresses given to the Council and in the social proclamation of John XXIII should play a role were already touched upon in this first letter.

With this encyclical, the Pope announced a new perspective on ecumenism . But he also makes it clear that initially it should only be an internal church council.
