Adeliza of Barking
Adeliza of Barking (also Adelidis or Adelaide of Barking ; † around 1173) was an abbess of Barking Abbey in England .
Adeliza was a daughter of the Norman knight John Fitz Richard . Between 1136 and 1138, she was appointed abbess of the Barking nunnery by King Stephen of Blois , which was presumably the king's thanks to her brothers Pain and Eustace FitzJohn , who had agreed to his controversial accession to the throne. Little is known about their life. Around 1145 she founded St Mary’s Hospital in Ilford . The monk and future abbot of Westminster Abbey , Osbert of Clare , who visited his nieces Margaret and Cecilia at Barking Abbey in the mid-1150s, praised their chastity. However, she was also involved in a conflict with Archbishop Theobald of Canterbury , probably over a dispute over a tithe , which the priest Roger of Ingatestone also claimed. She was succeeded by Mary, a sister of Archbishop Thomas Becket .
