Adeloneivaia is a genus of butterflies from the family of the peacock moth (Saturniidae). The Natural History Museum's Global Lepidoptera Names Indexlists 19 species for the genus.

features

The small to medium-sized moths are mainly yellowish or brownish in color. In the males the outer edge of the forewings is rather straight, in the females it is more rounded. In all species a conspicuous discal spot is formed on the forewings. It is strongly regressed or absent on the hind wings. Both sexes have double-feathered antennae and a foldable anal bush at the end of the abdomen. The latter is unique for peacock moths in North America. After mating, these tufts are shed.

The greenish eggs have a translucent shell through which the embryo can be seen well before hatching. The conspicuous caterpillars have rows with long tubercles, which in some species are iridescent in color and silver and reflect the light like the Sphingicampa caterpillars.

Occurrence and way of life

The genus is distributed from Arizona, from where a single find exists, over Mexico and Central America to South America in the north of Argentina. Very little is known about the way animals live. In captive animals it is known that pupation takes place in the ground.
