description

The stately town hall and commercial building in the pedestrian zone at Hauptstrasse 46 was built around 1783 by the wealthy freight forwarder Friedrich Mähler as the largest and most expensive residential building in Nordhorn at the time.

The two-story building has red facing bricks and a sandstone portal. Inside, the ground floor was covered with oak planks and a massive, richly decorated oak staircase led to the upper floor.

When Mähler, who had achieved prosperity during the heyday of the Vecht shipping industry , went bankrupt in 1844, he sold the property for 7,700 guilders to the chemical manufacturer and former Nordhorn mayor Ernst Firnhaber . He converted the ground floor of the community center into business premises, where he opened the first pharmacy in town, called it Adler-Apotheke and ran it until his death in 1872. His son, later his grandson, then took over the business until 1897. In 1905 Eduard Zimpel from Peine bought the property from the Firnhaber family, settled with his family in Nordhorn and continued to run the pharmacy. As a result, the house and shop were rebuilt, renovated and changed several times. The property remained in family ownership until 2011, when Hans-Gerd Scholand , Zimpel's grandson, closed the Adler pharmacy as the oldest pharmacy in the city and one of the oldest in the County of Bentheim for reasons of age. He sold the building to a project development company that had already acquired the neighboring house (Hauptstrasse 48).

In 2013, the Adler pharmacy underwent a thorough renovation and restoration, largely restoring its historical original condition. After completion of the work, a shop will be operated again in the building.
