Adolf Weil (racing driver)

Adolf Weil (born December 25, 1938 in Solingen ; † May 12, 2011 ) was the most successful motocross driver in the Federal Republic of Germany.

Adolf Weil made his GP debut in 1960 at the 250 cm³ EM run in Leichlingen . It was only nine years later that the then 30-year-old drove his first full World Championship season as a Maico factory driver and finished the 500 cm³ World Championship in 1969 in fourteenth, and in the next year in sixth. In 1971 Weil won the 500 cc GP in Bielstein and was third in the World Cup, and in 1972 fifth in the World Championship. In 1973 Weil switched to the 250 cc class, in which he was runner-up behind the Swede Hakan Andersson with three GP victories . In the three following years he was third in the World Cup (1974 and 1976 in the 500 World Cup, 1975 in the 250 World Cup). Weil finished the 1977 season in tenth in the 500 cc class. After the 1978 season, in which he was sixteenth in the 500 cc class, Weil ended his career at the age of almost 40.

In addition to his international successes, Weil also won a total of 14 national motocross championships, and in 1973 he also won the American Trans- AMA championship.

In 1976 he was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf , the highest state award for top athletic performance in Germany.
