Adolph Heinrich Strodtmann was a son of Johann Strodtmann (* April 21, 1700 in Preetz; † July 10, 1757) and his third wife Margaretha Elisabeth, née Nordtmann (* September 22, 1730 in Bad Segeberg ). The ancestors of the Strodtmann family on the paternal side had lived in Preetz for three generations, where they worked as merchants and traders. The progenitor of the family was the citizen and merchant Friedrich Strodtmann, who lived in Lübeck from 1631 and died there in 1668.

Strodtmann attended the cathedral school Schleswig and studied from 1772 at the University of Göttingen . On Michaelmas 1774 he moved to the University of Kiel , where only about 100 people studied at the time. From 1776 to 1778 he worked as an “informator” for Countess Ahlefeld's two sons in Glückstadt . He passed the exam and was rector of the Latin school in Hadersleben from 1778 to 1785. He was considered a hardworking, skilful and loyal school director, who thus earned the reputation of the population. If a maximum of three students had passed their Abitur by the time he took office, he increased their number to nine.

Due to the low wages as a headmaster, Strodtmann moved to St. Peter in Eiderstedt as a preacher . He worked here from 1785 to 1797. In accordance with the Eiderstedter privilege, his colleagues elected him provost for two years.

At the end of 1796 Strodtmann received a call as preacher and provost in Hadersleben. He was supposed to support his father-in-law, the Consistorial Councilor Cretschmer, and later take over his position. His inauguration at the Marienkirche took place on March 26, 1797. Here he worked extensively and successfully until 1839.

In Hadersleben, Strodtmann was particularly concerned with the moral and educational sense of practical theology in the Age of Enlightenment. Above all, he wanted to promote charitable activities, which as provost was fully possible for him. He gave many speeches and wrote texts from which it can be inferred that people would proceed in this way if they knew which things were good and helpful. The theologian always worked on a biblical basis, which was characterized by a natural piety and living rationalism.

On the occasion of his 50th anniversary of service, he was appointed consistorial councilor for his services in the region.

family

Strodtmann married Elisabeth Magdalena Cretschmer on November 2, 1779 or 1780 (born September 2, 1761 in Maugstrup ). In his second marriage on October 14, 1803, he married the preacher's daughter Sophia Amalie Mygind (* 1774 in Flemløse ). A total of ten children emerged from these marriages, including the theologian Johann Sigismund .
