Advanced Simulation and Computing Program
The Advanced Simulation and Computing Program ( ASC ), formerly known as the Accelerated Strategic Computing Initiative ( ASCI ), is a US government program that began in 1995 and is primarily used to simulate nuclear weapons tests that have been subject to a moratorium since 1992 US government subject. The program is run by the Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and has an annual budget of approximately US $ 600 million. The program is especially by the TOP500 known list of the world's fastest supercomputers, which hosts the program regularly take top places. The research centers Los Alamos National Laboratory / LANL (Los Alamos, New Mexico), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory / LLNL (Livermore, California), and Sandia National Laboratories / SNL (Albuquerque, New Mexico) as well as several American universities participate in the program. Well-known computers of the program include:
- BlueGene / L at the LLNL
- ASC Thor's Hammer / Red Storm at the SNL (2nd place)
- ASC Purple at LLNL (4th place)
- ASC Q at LANL (6th place)
Are already decommissioned or switched off:
- ASCI White (LLNL)
- ASCI Red (SNL)
- ASCI Blue Pacific (LLNL)
- ASCI Blue Mountain (LANL)
- IBM Roadrunner at Los Alamos National Laboratory
