Philipp Alegambe

Philipp Alegambe (born January 22, 1592 in Brussels , † September 6, 1652 in Rome ) was a Jesuit and historian .

Alegambe first entered the service of the Duke of Ossun ( Osuna ) in Spain , whom he accompanied on his journey as Viceroy of Sicily . On September 7, 1613, he joined a Jesuit order in Palermo . Here he studied philosophy , but was then sent to Rome to study theology at the Collegium Romanum . After his completion, the Jesuit general appointed him professor of philosophy at the University of Graz , where he, later also appointed professor of theology, earned his doctorate in theology in 1629.

Alegambe then entered the service of Prince Hans Ulrich von Eggenberg , whose son he accompanied on trips through Europe for the next five years. Returning to Graz, he taught moral theology at the university until 1638 he had to travel to Rome again with the prince. The general retained him in Rome as his secretary for Germany, which position he held for four years. From 1642 until his death, Alegambe was the spiritual director of the professed house in Rome.

Alegambe added to the list of Jesuit writers published by Pedro de Ribadeneira in 1608 . The Bibliotheca Scriptorum Societatis Jesu is the main source for all similar writings of this type.
