Ailios Herodianos

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ailios Herodianos ( Greek Αἴλιος Ἡρωδιανός , Latin Aelius Herodianus , German Herodian ; * around 180, † around 250) was one of the most famous Greek grammarians of antiquity. He is not to be confused with the historian Herodian .

He was born in Alexandria as the son of Apollonios Dyskolos . The surviving fragments of his works suggest that his work focused on issues of stress or emphasis on the individual syllables of words. Herodianos went to Rome , where he wrote his general theory of accents (verse doctrine, prosody ) , which he dedicated to Emperor Marcus Aurelius . Other works are an attic lexicon called Philhetaerus and a study of irregular words. The extensive collections of Herodianos are the most important source of all later grammarians, by whom he was highly valued. Nothing more is known about his life.

Works

  • The special style ( Περὶ μονήρους λέξεως ); the only work by Herodianos that has been handed down in full.
  • Categories ( Ἐπιμερισμοί , Latin Partitiones )
  • General theory of accents ( Ἡ καθ 'ὅλου προσῳδία , also Καθολικὴ προσῳδία , Latin De prosodia catholica ("all-encompassing verse doctrine") or Μεγάλη προσῳδία ) ("great verse doctrine"); Work in 20 books, dedicated to Mark Aurel
  • Attic prosody ( Ἀττικὴ προσῳδία )

Fake works

  • Accents ( Περὶ τόνων ), probably written by a later grammarian named Theodosius of Byzantium.
  • Figures ( Περὶ σχημάτων , De figuris ); the author is known as "Pseudo-Herodian".
  • Philetairos ( Φιλέταιρος ). It probably comes from Sulpicius Cornelianus, a rhetorician and secretary to Mark Aurel.
