The Aerolift Flight 1015 was a scheduled flight out of airline Aerolift from airport Luxor in Egypt to Airport Mykolaiv in the Ukraine . On February 20, 2009, an Antonov An-12B freighter crashed on this flight shortly after take-off. All 5 people on board the Antonov were killed in the incident.
Airplane and occupants
The aircraft used on the flight was a 43-year-old Soviet -made Antonov An-12B that had made its maiden flight in 1966. The machine had the factory number 6344310. The four-engine transport aircraft was equipped with four Iwchenko AI-20M turboprop engines .
In post-Soviet times, the machine was initially operated by the airline Avial NV and then by the Russian Post, each with the aircraft registration number RA11339 .
The machine was certified with an aircraft registration number from São Tomé and Príncipe (S9-SVN) . The machine's approval had expired four years earlier - so the aircraft was being operated illegally.
The machine belonged to the airline Aerolift . There was a five-man crew on board, one of whom came from Russia and two each from Ukraine and Belarus .
Course of the flight and course of the accident
The aircraft was on a transfer flight from Kisangani via Entebbe in Uganda to Mykolaiv in Ukraine . On the way, the fuel gauge showed a significantly lower fuel level than would have been expected. During the stopover in Luxor , Egypt , the machine ran out of kerosene.
During the inspection of the machine it was found that it had a fuel leak and that the fuel had become scarce as a result of this in flight. A mechanic advised the pilots not to continue flying the machine and recommended that they leave the Antonov on the ground until repairs can be carried out. The master refused and requested that the engine be refueled.
After refueling, the Antonov lined up for take-off to continue the flight. The pilots received clearance to take off from runway 20. The machine accelerated and took off. An eyewitness reported that the machine rose noticeably slowly after taking off. One engine caught fire and the fire quickly spread to other parts of the aircraft. About 700 meters behind the runway, the Antonov crashed next to a military base. The machine caught fire and was destroyed. All five crew members were killed.
The machine was torn apart on impact. The stern section was still visible, but the fuselage and wings were 10 meters away and were completely burned out. Because he was in the military catchment area, access to the crash site was blocked. Due to the proximity to military buildings, it was forbidden to take pictures of the crash site.
consequences
In the same year, Aerolift ceased operations.
