history

The ornamental gable on the rear suburb

The building was built in 1904 for the Feldschlösschen stock brewery by Andreas Zuber instead of three old townhouses . The building application was submitted on March 4, 1904. The name Affenkasten goes back to the Affenkasten brewery , which was founded by Robert Pfisterer in 1850 and taken over by the Feldschlösschen brewery in 1895.

For decades, the restaurant was considered a meeting place for Aargau culture. Jazz concerts were held there regularly. A number of clubs also had their meeting point in the Affenkasten, including the Schwingclub Aarau and the surrounding area, the ATF fan club of FC Aarau and the Aarau section of the SAC . The restaurant operation ended on October 31, 2006 after the building owners no longer extended the expiring contract with the landlord. The building found new tenants and was converted into a bookstore in the area of the former restaurant . Today it serves as a sales location for the Thalia Group .

Building

The house is built in the neo-Gothic style. On the rear suburb it has a three-part facade, the middle part of which has a steep ornamental gable. The decorative painting from the construction period was replaced around 1920 by paintings by Max Burgmeister and Ernest Bohlen. The two were also making paintings inside the building at the same time. There are monkey statues above the two entrances.
