The Vordere Vorstadt is a street in the city of Aarau . It leads from Aargauerplatz to the old town and turns into Rathausgasse. It runs parallel to the rear suburb to the east , with which it also shares the history of its origins.

history

Since the city was founded, the Vordere Vorstadt has connected the actual main road through the Mittelland, which had emerged from a Roman road, with the city. The city was expanded here in the 14th century, but it was never enclosed by the city wall. The open city stream flowed through the Vordere Vorstadt in the Middle Ages . A hospital with a chapel is proven here as early as 1364. The suburban residents received citizenship in 1369. However, the relationship was unclear, so that in 1441 and 1443 judgments were made that regulated the relationship between the residents outside and within the city walls. After the Battle of Sempach , the Bernese incinerated this unprotected part of the city. Even then there was one more house outside the city walls than inside.

location

The government building forms an optical barrier on Aargauerplatz at the southern end, as does the Upper Tower at the northern end. From Aargauerplatz, Bahnhofstrasse heads east, and Obere Vorstadt heads south-east. The Schanzrain forms the western end of Aargauerplatz and leads from there in a south-westerly direction away from the city. The Rain flows approximately in the middle into the Vordere Vorstadt. In front of the Upper Tower, the moat leads away to the east, while the Ziegelrain leads away to the west. The rear suburb runs east of the Vorderen Vorstadt .

The Vordere Vorstadt is not traffic-calmed and the buses of the Aarau bus company and PostAuto Schweiz AG , which serve districts and communities on the northern bank of the Aare , also run through it .

Development

The development followed the same pattern as within the city walls, so that it has a similar appearance to Rathausgasse. Due to the open position of the Stadtbach at that time and its guidance in the middle of the street, as well as the construction of a roadway on both sides, a relatively wide road resulted after the Stadtbach was covered. Typical townhouses were built on both sides, most of which have the typical Aarau cirques with painted roof undersides.
