The Hintere Vorstadt is a street in the city of Aarau . It runs parallel to the Vorderen Vorstadt to the west , with which it also shares the history of its origins.

location

The southern end of the rear suburb is the Obere Mühle , which seals off the street from Bahnhofstrasse so that there is only a small passage east of the building. As through the Vordere Vorstadt, part of the Stadtbach also ran through the Hintere Vorstadt . However, this was not in the middle of the street, but along the western front of the building. The water from this part of the city creek previously drove the Obere Mühle and was led in a stone pot at the other end of the street over the city moat into the old town. Today this part of the Stadtbach is run underground.

The road is traffic-calmed, access with motor vehicles is only possible from the north over the ditch and through the Igelweid going off in an easterly direction.

Development

The medieval buildings are only partially present, especially on the eastern side of the street some modern buildings have been built. Nevertheless, the old town houses typical of Aarau can also be found here with rounds and painted roof undersides.

On the west side, instead of two buildings, the Affenkasten restaurant was built in 1904 , which with its painted front and neo-Gothic facade forms a visual focal point in the street. To the south of the monkey box is the former office building, built in the 19th century, which originally served as barracks and was used for a trade school between 1825 and 1835 and for a boys' school between 1835 and 1875. It was only from 1875 to 1936 the office building of the district Aarau, until today's official home on the Laurenzenvorstadt moved. Today it houses a clothes shop on the ground floor.
