Afgooye (also written Afgoye or Afgoi ) is a city in southern Somalia . It is located inland on the Shabeelle River, a little northwest of the state capital Mogadishu , in the Shabeellaha Hoose region . According to an estimate, the number of inhabitants in 2007 was 68,000.

In the history of Somalia , Afgooye became the capital of a Geledi-Digil ( Rahanweyn ) sultanate after the fall of the Ajuran- Hawiye state at the end of the 17th century . The place is known for the Istunka festival , which takes place here, including stick fights .

After heavy fighting, over 200,000 people fled Mogadishu in the direction of Afgooye in 2007. Many have settled along the approximately 30 km long road from Mogadishu to Afgooye. In September 2010, the UNHCR estimated that around 410,000 displaced people were now living in this so-called Afgooye corridor . This has made the corridor the third largest urban area after Mogadishu and Hargeisa .

On May 25, 2012, the Afgooye Corridor was recaptured by the al-Shabaab militias by troops of the African Union ( AMISOM ) and government military units in Mogadishu in Operation Free Shabelle . After the capture of Elasha Biyaha and the end of the two-week operation, the entire corridor is again under the sovereignty of the central government, and aid organizations have free access to the population.
