AgênciaBrasil ( ABR ) is a Brazilian news and picture agency with headquarters in Brasília and two regional offices in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro .
Under the dictator Getúlio Vargas , the government's own Agência Nacional was established on March 1, 1937 . It existed until 1979, when it was converted into the state-owned company Empresa Brasileira de Notícias (EBN) during the government of João Baptista de Oliveira Figueiredo , the former head of the Serviço Nacional de Informações (SNI) secret service . Today's agency was created as an EBN replacement under President Fernando Collor de Mello and is managed by the Empresa Brasil de Comunicação (EBC).
Since around 2003 it has been in a process of editorial transformation. Previously, reporting on federal government events was limited. Errors and false reports or censorship were admitted several times.
With its news, images and infographics written by journalists, ABR now supplies a large number of regional newspapers and Internet portals in Brazil, but also important media companies such as B. O Estado de S. Paulo , O Globo , Folha de S. Paulo or Universo Online (UOL).
She is a member of the Aliança das Agências de Informação de Língua Portuguesa (ALP, German: Association of Portuguese- Language News Agencies ).
