Agência Brasileira de Inteligência (ABIN) is the national intelligence service of Brazil . ABIN is the successor organization to the Serviço Nacional de Informações (SNI), which was formed during the government of Humberto Castelo Branco in the mid-1960s. He is subordinate to the President of the Federative Republic of Brazil , who at the same time holds the highest competence and decision-making authority over the secret service. The seat is in the capital Brasília . The tasks include counter-espionage and terrorism, gathering information and protecting citizens.

tasks

The ABIN is tied to the Office for Institutional Security (GSI) and is responsible for providing strategic information, its timely and reliable analysis, which contribute to the decision-making of the state bodies. In the central organ of the Sistema Brasileiro de Inteligência (Sisbin), which has a total of 38 members, ABIN is responsible for ensuring that the federal executive has access to knowledge about the security of the state and society, as well as about defense, foreign policy, internal security, socio-economic development and scientific and technological development.

history

The ABIN was founded on December 7, 1999 as the successor to various predecessor organizations , some of which were subordinate to the Brazilian military . The military authority Conselho de Defesa Nacional was founded as early as 1927, initially dealing with secret service tasks. After the successor organization Serviço de Segurança Nacional (SNI) stopped working in the turmoil of the military coup of 1964 and was replaced by a service belonging to the regime, the authority existed until 1990. The Abin was founded in 1999 and has since taken over the task of domestic and international Foreign secret service - in contrast to its predecessor as a civil authority.
