The Aga Khan Trophy is the world's most difficult show jumping trophy , as it is only awarded if the Aga Khan Cup has been won three times in a row .

The Aga Khan Cup was founded in 1926 by Aga Khan III. founded in Dublin as a show jumping competition of nations . An essential background for its establishment was the attempt to give Irish horse breeders a platform for the presentation of their horses , which should also attract attention abroad. The Aga Khan Trophy will only be awarded if this cup has been won three times in a row , which has only happened five times since it was founded - by Switzerland in 1930, Ireland in 1937 and 1979, and Great Britain in 1953 and 1975. In order to secure the win in 1975, Great Britain decided not to participate the European Show Jumping Championships in order to be able to concentrate fully on winning this trophy.

The Aga Khan Cup is part of the FEI Nations Cup in show jumping .
