The Agaplesion Bethanien Krankenhaus Heidelberg gGmbH operates a geriatric center with an acute hospital and rehabilitation clinic in the Heidelberg district of Südstadt . Thanks to a cooperation agreement with the University Hospital , it is the geriatric center at Heidelberg University Hospital and an academic teaching hospital .
history
The hospital was founded in 1931, while the specialization as an institution for the very old began in 1979 with the establishment of a medical-geriatric department. In 1993 a department for geriatric rehabilitation was set up, in 1999 inpatient care for the elderly and a department for short-term care. Special features are the area of palliative medical geriatrics and a semi-closed geriatric-internal ward for acutely ill dementia patients (GISAD).
Since 2006 the Agaplesion non-profit corporation has held the majority of the company shares with 60 percent; the Bethanien Diakonissen-Stiftung holds 40 percent.
research
Geriatric research has been carried out at the Bethanien Hospital since 1979. The initial and still existing priorities were nutrition in old age, clinical pharmacology in old age and geriatric assessment. A more recent research focus is strength and coordination training in old age, especially for cognitively impaired patients.
