Age concern

Age Concern is a national charity for the elderly and elderly in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland , Spain , New Zealand and some other countries, as an NGO . The organization was founded in 1940 in London, where it is still based today. Today the organization is both an umbrella organization under the Charities Act of 2006 and a widespread collection movement of local initiatives. The logo is the word Age in capital letters in black on a white background and the word concern (for something like: concerns) in red in handwriting diagonally underneath.

It emerged from the Old People's Welfare Committee , chaired by Eleanor Rathbone, and the semi-state National Old People's Welfare Committee (NOPWC) that emerged from it in 1944 . This first renaming should make the distinction to local initiatives clear. Historically, the World War was the reason for the foundation because it caused the support network for the elderly in many families to collapse. In the 50s and 60s there was stronger state funding (keyword welfare state ). At that time, the NOPWC also began to campaign for the training of staff in old people's homes . In 1971 this forerunner organization was completely separated from the state apparatus and was given its current name. Age Concern became something of a general brand; Anyone who does something for the elderly, who does it in addition to his other activities, does it under this name, this logo. It offers advice in conflict situations, care for the elderly , financial support, information, but also travel organization and insurance protection.

In the United Kingdom, around 20 to 30 percent of men and 35 to 60 percent of women, depending on age, live on the 11 million older people alone. 60 to 65% of the elderly are said to have long-term health problems. A mix of these two figures gives the target group for Age Concern's activities . Recently, however, she has been addressing the early retirees (50+) for prevention and the entire population against any age discrimination .

In 1986 Age Concern established a Gerontology Institute at King's College , London .

In 2009 Age Concern merged with Help the Aged to form Age UK .
