The Agencja Bezpieczeństwa Wewnętrznego ( ABW ; German  Agency for Internal Security ) is the Polish domestic secret service based in Warsaw . As the government institute for Polish security at home, he tries to neutralize dangers to the Polish state apparatus in good time.

tasks

The tasks of the ABW include:

  • Clarification and neutralization of threats to the internal security of the Polish state and its constitution. This includes the protection of the constitution, independence, sovereignty and the inviolability of Polish territory
  • Investigation and prosecution of criminal offenses in the areas
    • Organized crime
    • Espionage, terrorism, betrayal of state secrets
    • Offenses against the financial order of the state
    • Corruption by civil servants or civil servants
    • Production processes and exchange of goods, technologies and services of strategic importance for the security of Poland
    • Illegal production, possession and sale of weapons, ammunition, explosives, weapons of mass destruction and psychotropic substances
  • Security services within the framework of state security
  • Protection of state secrets in the field of foreign relations
  • Identification and analysis of information that could affect the internal security of Poland and the protection of the constitution and its provision to the relevant state organs
  • Carrying out tasks classified as secret or determined by international agreements

The ABW has 15 regional offices and has been headed by Krzysztof Bondaryk since January 16, 2008. In 2008 it became known that the ABW plans to scan the address data of all letters in Poland. With this, a database should be set up, the data of which can be evaluated comparatively in writing . Equipping the Polish post with the appropriate scanners should cost 250 million złoty.
