Agia Irini ( Greek Αγία Ειρήνη 'Saint Irene') is the name of a settlement in the municipality of Rethymno in the municipality of the same name in northern Crete . It is located at a height of 260 meters at the foot of the Vrysinas mountain , around four kilometers south of the city center, directly at a monastery of St. Irene , after whom the village is named. It was first mentioned in writing in 1545 by Francesco Barozzi . Agia Irini had a total of 75 inhabitants in 2011.

The Abbey of Saint Irene was destroyed during the uprisings against Ottoman rule in 1866 and has been fallow ever since; In 1989 it was restored and is now inhabited again. The 1995 Europa Nostra Prize for the Conservation of Cultural Heritage of the European Union was awarded for the restoration . The nunnery houses a small church museum. In addition, icons, textiles and handicrafts of the nuns are offered for sale.
