Agia Trias (Sipahi)
Agia Trias ( Greek Αγία Τριάς , Holy Trinity ') is a basilica in the local area of Agia Trias / Sipahi on the Karpas peninsula in the Famagusta district , Cyprus .
The early Byzantine column basilica was built in the 6th century. The three-aisled church with east-facing apses was reached via a columned narthex . In the main nave there are remains of a pulpit. The side aisles had attached galleries, the roofing was a wooden construction. In front of the main apse, Heraklios, Aetis, Euthalis and Eutychianos are named in a mosaic inscription as the founders of the basilica .
Marble steps leading down to a cruciform basin have been preserved from the attached baptistery . Remains of the bishop's palace can be seen on the west side of the basilica.
Just one and a half centuries after it was built, the basilica and the nearby settlement were destroyed. After trying to re-use it, it was finally given up at the end of the 8th century.
The ruin of the church building gained fame through the well-preserved mosaic floors with their geometrical, which are based on models of the Eastern Mediterranean school.
