Agrotis fasciata is an extinct butterfly ( moth ) from the owl butterfly family(Noctuidae) that was endemic to the Midway Atoll .

features

Agrotis fasciata reached a wingspan of 47 millimeters. The top of the forewings was light brown in basic color. Inner and outer transverse lines were clearly drawn dark. The inner transverse line was jagged large, the outer transverse line finely jagged. Kidney and ring flaws were clearly developed and slightly darker than the basic color. An indistinct middle shadow ran from the inner edge, where the outer transverse line ends, continues over the kidney flaws to the costa. The fringes were mostly kept in the basic color of the upper side of the wing, but the base of the fringes was colored yellow. The top of the hind wings was cream colored. Within the middle a slightly wavy, narrow, black band ran over both hind wings. The underside of the forewings was buff-gray at the base and turned darker gray towards the outer edge. There was a hair-brown diagonal line on the apical half. The underside of the hind wings was light buff with a hairy brown band that matched that on the forewings. The head and neck collar ( patagia ) were red-brown. The thorax was gray wood-brown. The abdomen was cinnamon in color.

Geographical distribution, habitat and way of life

Agrotis fasciata was endemic to the Midway Atoll . The islands have a subtropical climate. Nothing is known about the way of life.

die out

The last record of Agrotis fasciata was around 1912. A possible cause of the extinction could have been exotic organisms that were introduced to the Midway Atoll with the aim of biological pest control. During an expedition in 1994 this species could not be rediscovered. Agrotis fasciata was added to the IUCN Red List in 1986 and to the United States Fish and Wildlife Service 's list of extinct insects in 1989 .
