Agua Mansa is an abandoned settlement in San Bernardino County , California , as a result of a flood disaster . It was on the Santa Ana River . All that remains of Agua Mansa is the cemetery, which is protected as Agua Mansa Pioneer Cementary as a California State Historic Landmark.

The town was founded in the 1830s as a buffer against bandits on the road from Santa Fe to Los Angeles . At the same time, a twin settlement called La Placita was built on the other side of the river . These two places were the first settlements in the San Bernardino Valley with their own school and church. Around 1845 the places were the largest settlements between Los Angeles and New Mexico . In 1862 Agua Mansa was almost completely destroyed by a flood from the Santa Ana River. Only the church, the cemetery and a commercial building built in 1854 survived the flood. Reconstruction ultimately failed. In 1867 the parish was moved to San Bernardino , and the church building was left to decay from 1883.
