Ahkiolahden kanava

The Akiolahtikanal ( Finnish: Ahkiolahden kanava ) is a lock canal in the municipality of Kuopio , which is operated by Merenkulkulaitos . It was built primarily for rafting wood. It is located on the edge of the Iisalmi line of the Vuoksi catchment area . The canal connects the Maaninkajärvi with the Onkivesi . The water level difference between the two lakes is between 3.1 and 3.5 m.

The old Ahkiolahtikanal was built in 1866–1868 and 1872–1874. With its completion it replaced the small Vianna Canal . The old Ahkiolahti Canal is now a sight.

The first Ahkiolahtkanal was single-lock and opened to traffic in May 1874, which enabled steamboat traffic from Kuopio to Iisalmi . After the Ahkiolahtikanal had already been expanded into two locks in 1884–1885, it was made back in again in 1916. The 1.6 kilometers were dug in the 1930s.

The canal in operation today was partially built in 1981–1983. The main purpose of the structure is the rafting of wood. The lock is made of concrete and equipped with sector gates and electrical control devices. The total length of the lock is 240 m, the usable length 165 m and the usable width 16 m. The permitted dimensions for ships are 160.0 m long, 11.8 m wide, 2.4 m deep and 12 m high.
