Ahnenblatt is a Windows computer genealogy program . Entered genealogical data is stored in a proprietary file format that can, however, be converted into other formats. Ahnenblatt supports u. a. the GEDCOM format. From version 3.0 the software is chargeable. Older versions still available are free of charge.

Functions

  • Simple data entry in a clear input dialog including source information, comments and images
  • Navigator for clear presentation and selection of people
  • Import of GEDCOM files of all known variations ( ANSI , ASCII , Unicode , UTF-8 , ANSEL)
  • Export in various formats, for example GEDCOM, TinyTafel, XML format, CSV format , WinHelp format
  • Creation of websites with pictures of people (individual HTML page or complete web archive)
  • Printout of lists of ancestors and tribe with preview images and extensive options, for example father line, mother line, top ancestors etc.
  • Printout of master and descendant tables in various print formats
  • Possibility to print in poster formats of any size
  • Export of all lists in various file formats such as Word , AmiPro , RTF , ASCII, LaTeX , etc.
  • Full text search across all persons and entries
  • Plausibility check to track down input errors
  • Merging different ancestral files
  • Portable version - starts from USB stick without installation
  • Unicode support (for international special characters and fonts)
  • Plug-in support

The paid version 3.0 received the following improvements and additions:

  • revised input dialog (more events, more details)
  • Source management
  • Address management
  • Task management
  • Update search (manual / automatic)
  • Option "identifier behind name" (options / text modules)
  • List of "family facts" as an overview of your own genealogy
  • additional English language program help

The main point of criticism of the commercial and free version is the small number of generations that can be displayed on the screen.

Others

The program was first published in February 2001. It is available in 19 languages. Currently (2017) it can be run on Windows XP or higher. Support for Windows 95 was discontinued with version 2.96 from October 2016. An installer, a portable ( ZIP file) and a special PortableApps variant are available for download .

Extensions

The functionality of Ahnenblatt can be expanded with plug-ins .

Some examples of such plug-ins are:

  • Ancestry pass-in plug-in: Generate an ancestral passport in various layouts
  • Find and Match Images Plug-in: Find orphaned images
  • Data protection filter plug-in: cleans up all people who meet the set filter criteria if desired.
  • Google Earth plug-in: display of the ancestors in Google Earth
  • Island finder plug-in: Finding people without relation to others
  • Calendar output plug-in: generated *. ics file to import into calendar ( e.g. Outlook , Thunderbird + Lightning )
  • Lifetime plug-in: generates a timeline of people in the form of a bar graph
  • Name-Lister-Plug-in: structured output of places / areas with associated persons
  • Place name list plug-in: creates a list that sorts events by place, such as birth, baptism, wedding, death, etc.

Since the plug-ins are not created by the program author, not all plug-ins are adapted to the current program versions. As a result, some plug-ins are not compatible with newer program versions. There is no list of which plug-ins work with which program version.

Limits of plug-in programming:

  • The internal database format is unknown
  • The internal database cannot be accessed, so there is no way to change data
  • The internal management of the graphic output is unknown, so nothing can be changed in the graphic display
  • There is no interface description or support for creating plug-ins, just viewing some plug-ins that have already been created
