The Ahukini Terminal and Railway is a former railway company in Hawaii ( United States ). They operated a 19-kilometer railroad line in the gauge of 2½ feet (762 mm) from the port of Anahola to Lihue on the east coast of the island of Kauai . The railway was used exclusively for freight traffic. It had no connection to the other same gauge railroad on the island, the Kauai Railway .

history

The railway company was founded in 1920. In May 1921, the section from Kealia to Ahukini Landing Station on Hanamaulu Bay went into operation. Anahola was reached by the end of the year. The route was almost 23 kilometers long. The construction was difficult as the Hanamaulu River and the Waialua River had to be crossed. Further deep ravines were crossed with dams. On February 1, 1922, the port at Ahukini Landing Station was completed. In 1931 an eight-kilometer extension to Lihue went into operation. In 1934 the railway was acquired by a sugar plantation in Lihue and has been closed to the public ever since. The last trains ran in 1959.

The fleet consisted of two steam locomotives with the wheel arrangement C ( Porter type ), 20 closed and two flat freight cars. Further flat wagons were leased from adjacent plantations.
