Kapaʻa (German Kapaa , official name Kapaa Census Designated Place ) is a census-designated place in Kauaʻi County in the state of Hawaii in the United States . In the 2010 census, around 10,700 inhabitants were counted. In 2013, the settlement area was named one of the most beautiful cities in the United States.

Geographical location

The settlement area is located in the east of the island of Kaua'i . The United States Census Bureau has determined a total area of ​​25.9 km² for Kapaʻa, of which 25.3 km² are land and 0.6 km² are water.

The settlement lies on a flat coastal plain, which is criss-crossed by numerous bodies of water . The sandy beaches on the coast are constantly exposed to erosion , although the coastline is almost completely surrounded by reefs . Kapa'a is in the danger zone of tsunamis .

Expansion of the urban area

It is bounded to the north by the Kapaʻa Stream, to the east by the Pacific Ocean , to the south by the residential area of ​​the Wailua Homesteads and to the west by the wooded area of ​​the Kealia Forest Reserve.

Buildings

Seto Building

In the old center of Kapaʻa is the Seto Building ( ), which is registered as a cultural monument in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP ). The wooden building was built in 1929 as the first grocery store on Kaua'i. The multicultural character of the building is evident in the western construction techniques, such as the large windows on the ground floor and the Asian influences, such as the pagoda-like roof and crossed swords over the windows on the upper floor.

The Kawamura Property ( ) buildings are also located in the historic center . Two wooden buildings from the 1920s stand on the site, which has been classified as historically significant by the State of Hawaii - State Historic Preservation (SHPD). This is a plantation-style house and a tool shed. The ensemble is one of the few remaining complexes.

Directly at the Kapaʻa Public Library is the Kapaʻa Stone Lantern ( ), a concrete lantern about four and a half meters high. The lantern was built by the Japanese community in 1915 to commemorate the Russo-Japanese War . It was buried for protection during the Second World War and was not rediscovered until 1972. In 1987 it was rebuilt and meanwhile renovated.

In the Wailua Homestaeds is the ʻOpaekaʻa Road Bridge , which crosses the ʻOpaekaʻa Stream there. It is possibly the only British-made bridge in existence in the United States and one of the few remaining 19th-century British products in Hawaii.

Kapaa Beach Park

Kapaʻa Beach Park ( ) is a publicly accessible park on Kapaʻa Beach with pavilions and picnic facilities. This is followed by Waipoli Park ( ) to the south . Economy and Infrastructure
